Peripheral Interaction
Challenges and Opportunities for HCI in the Periphery of Attention (2016) Access online

Editors: Saskia Bakker, Doris Hausen, Ted Selker - ISBN: 978-3-319-29521-3

Computing devices have become ever more present in our everyday environments, however embedding these technologies into our routines has remained a challenge. This book explores the novel theory of peripheral interaction to rectify this. This theory examines how interactive systems can be developed in such a way to allow people to seamlessly interact with their computer devices, but only focus on them at relevant times, building on the way in which people effortlessly divide their attention over several everyday activities in day to day life.

Designing for Peripheral Interaction:
seamlessly integrating interactive technology in everyday life (2015) Access online

Special issue no. 26 in International Journal on Interaction Design & Architecture(s) - IxD&A
Guest editors: Saskia Bakker, Doris Hausen, Elise van den Hoven, Ted Selker

The role of peripheral activity in everyday life is complex but important: with computers becoming ubiquitous, exploring peripheral interaction is an important step towards seamlessly integrating such technology in everyday life. This issue brings a sampling of fresh work in the emerging field of peripheral interaction, provides insight into alternative styles of human-computer interaction which are suitable for peripheral interaction and highlights the challenges of - but also the strong need for suitable methodology for - empirical evaluation of peripheral interaction designs.

Interactive devices such as mobile phones play an important, but often needlessly obtrusive role in everyday life. This can be prevented when people could interact with these devices without focused attention. We designed interactive devices with which teachers can effortlessly organize their class while teaching. With a straightforward design which anticipated people's everyday abilities, devices can be useful without inappropriately attracting attention.
